Most people don’t think of tea as a health food, but the facts shows us differently. Throughout history, tea has been recommended for many types of ailments, but it has only been in recent years that the general medical population has recognized the true benefits of tea. Although most of these benefits relate to Chinese Green Tea, many medical doctors feel that any type of tea affords the same health and antioxidant benefits as those found in green tea.
For decades, our ancestors have schooled us on the benefits of drinking tea. One of the most common home remedies for colds in yesteryear was that of the “hot totti,” which consisted of hot tea, lemon, honey, and a “swig” of spirits (whiskey, brandy, scotch). The patient then went to bed and huddled under the covers to sweat the cold out of their body. Sadly, today it is illegal to use this remedy on children because of its alcohol content though many cold medicines indeed contain alcohol. Another useful home remedy for tea is drinking hot tea with honey and lemon for a sore throat – the lemon is optional; it is the honey that is important. The combination of the tea with the honey has a soothing effect on the sore throat, allowing it to heal without prescription or over the counter medications.
Green tea has been praised for its antioxidant qualities, and many people resort to drinking these Chinese herbal teas as soon as cold weather begins to show its ugly face in order to build up their immune system, and thus prevent many of winter’s viral and bacterial infections. Though some medical professionals believe that all of the teas have these same qualities, only the green teas have a history that connects their consumption to a decrease in illness as the result of a boost to the immune system.
